Overview

Aboriginal Building Connections is a three-hour parenting education seminar that has been developed to support Aboriginal parents, grandparents, carers and extended family members to practise positive ways of parenting after separation.

In particular, it aims to encourage Aboriginal parents, grandparents, carers and extended family members to gain an awareness of the importance of giving up serious conflict to support their kids and grow them healthy, safe and strong.

An Aboriginal Liaison Worker is available for this and other programs.

Who is it for?

Separated Aboriginal parents who are struggling with parenting.

Key outcomes

Aboriginal Building Connections has the following goals:
• To create awareness of how unresolved parental conflict affects kids.
• To provide a learning opportunity for participants to recognise the need to develop strategies to deal more calmly with the other parent and extended family.
• To encourage participants to become aware of the importance of being supportive of the kids’ relationship with the other parent.
• To encourage awareness of the need for better appreciation of the role of both parents (including themselves), and assist participants to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy parenting behaviours.
• To increase help-seeking behaviours in parents through professional support and help such as counselling, mediation or a parenting education program.
