What is happy slapping?

‘Happy slapping’ is using a camera phone to videotape a bullying incident that may include one or more kids slapping, hitting, kicking or punching the victim. It may involve sharing the video with a larger audience on a social-media site such as YouTube or via a mass email or text to humiliate and embarrass the victim.

• Recording someone being physically attacked by someone else for the amusement of others is not acceptable. This includes recording on a mobile phone or camera.

• This type of behaviour is dangerous and illegal. It could be seen as abuse and assault. You could be criminally charged for this type of behaviour.

• Anyone assaulted in this way should tell a trusted adult immediately – a report needs to be made with the police. The bullies could be charged for assault and harassment if the images are uploaded to the internet.
