For Children

Interrelate is for children…always!

Children learn about relationships by watching their parents relate to each other...positively and negatively. All Interrelate services and programs are based on the family as a system in which each member influences and is influenced by every other family member. Children are the most vulnerable to being shaped by the family...positively or negatively.

This makes children our Number One concern.

When there are problems in the family

Any number of things can happen in a family to place undue stress on children.

  • When family members have trouble communicating and stop listening to each other
  • When the family is going through a major change like divorce…or loss due to sickness or death
  • When the family separates and lives in different places from each other

Children in these families need help!

Special help for children in separating families

Family separation doesn't necessarily hurt children - it's unresolved high-level conflict between parents that leave long-lasting scars. The impact of separation and conflict is enormous; Interrelate's trained consultants help children understand what is going on in their family and inside themselves. Counsellors are experienced in assisting children with the changes that occur as their parents separate and learn to live apart.

At every Interrelate Family Centre appointments can be made for children to see a counsellor.

Why?

The research shows that when children in families with relationship problems get help:

  • They do better at school
  • They enjoy better relationships
  • They are less likely to get into trouble generally
  • They are less likely to have mental health problems

…and certainly not the least important, is that these children grow up and eventually become better parents themselves.
