Building Stronger Families

WHAT is Building Stronger Families (BSF)?

BSF is the name of the Post Separation Co-Operative Parenting Program run throughout NSW.

BSF is a post-separation parenting program. It stands for Building Stronger Families. It is for parents and other carers of children in separated families who are having trouble, usually major, agreeing on arrangements for these children. They may be in conflict over big questions such as who the child should live with, or how often a child should see one of their parents.

WHO is the BSF program for?

Parents and other carers of children in separated families attend BSF when they:
►know that conflict between them is affecting their child and don't know what to do about it
► have been ordered or encouraged by a court to attend a post-separation parenting program
►have been referred by their solicitor
One parent can attend on their own or both can attend but at different times so they don't have to meet.

HOW does it work?

The first thing that happens at BSF is an interview. This is the intake interview where:
► you will be able to talk about the conflict and other matters of concern to you and   your children
► you will find out what problems BSF can help with
► a place will be booked for you to attend a three hour seminar where you get to meet and talk to other people in your situation and  have a cup of tea or coffee

Childrens’ involvement

Children are a primary focus of BSF and sometimes they are invited to participate in the program through a child consult process. It may become apparent that further support would be helpful and appropriate child-specialist services may be arranged.
