Dubbo Happenings
Wising Up
Walter Villaflor, Indigenous Advisor at the family Relationship Centre, Dubbo has been instrumental in rolling out a new program. ‘Wising Up Information Forum’ in the Central West is funded by the Indigenous Coordination Centre in Dubbo. The first of a series of forums was held in Wellington on 29th March 2010, and was well attended. It is intended that these forums will be held in numerous towns throughout the region, and requests received to date indicate that this is a very real issue for Indigenous people and that more will be held in coming weeks.
The central focus of the ‘Wising Up’ forum is the impact that a family member’s incarceration has on their child/ren. When a family member goes to jail, children are deprived of their relationship with that person and this impacts in terms of their own identity and the increased probability that they will become offenders in future years...and eventually become incarcerated themselves.
‘Wising Up’ attempts to break the cycle in a constructive way. It has enlisted input from members of Aboriginal communities, the NSW Police and Aboriginal Community Health Service staff.
